Gorillas x Twitter

Twitter is being used for a new purpose: nature conservancy.

Soon, people will be able to 'follow' Ugandan gorillas on Twitter, in exchange for $1 donation to the Friend a Gorilla campaign. What does a gorilla have to tweet about? "OMG today I had the most delish termites for lunch. Nom nom nom." "Gary thinks he's such the alpha male, but really he's not." "Me hungry. Yeeeeeeek!" Well, perhaps not quite like that, but that's what I imagine anyway.

Lost and Found

Have you ever lost something on a bus, plane, or train?

According to this article in the San Francisco Examiner, here are some of the things people lose on BART, a mass transit system in San Francisco:
- Prosthetic limbs
- Teeth (dentures, gold teeth)
- Porn (magazines, videos)
- Sex toys
- Backpacks full of drugs

Oddly enough, across the way in New York, things are not much different, according to an article in the New York Post:
- Prosthetic limbs
- Used cooking pot
- Trumpet

Cheerleader Hunts, Kills Alligator

This headline speaks for itself, but here's the details in a report from USA Today:

A local cheerleader spent part of her weekend on a boat hunting of all things, alligators — and she came back with a big one.

Cammie Colin, 16, helped catch a gator that was 10 feet, 5 inches long and weighed 353 pounds.

The Pelion teen was on a boat with family and friends in a swampy area near the town of Santee and caught the reptile.

The group used a fishing pole to both lure the gator and drag him close to their boat.

"I was very shocked when it got to the boat that it was that size," Cammie said.

She then used a crossbow to shoot the gator. She and four others then taped the alligator's mouth shut and took it back to land.

The junior varsity cheerleader at White Knoll High School has been on deer hunts with her father, but this was her first time alligator hunting.

In South Carolina, 16-year-olds can register to hunt gators, and Cammie did that earlier this year.

Scientists Levitate Mouse

Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA have found a way to levitate small animals using a "superconducting magnet that generates a field powerful enough to levitate the water inside living animals."

Yuanming Liu, one of the researchers, speaking of the mouse they levitated: "It actually kicked around and started to spin, and without friction, it could spin faster and faster, and we think that made it even more disoriented," They decided to mildly sedate the next mouse they levitated.

Madonna: "I feel like I'm talking to a limousine!"

Okay, so there have been a whole lot of Michael Jackson tributes since Michael Jackson died on June 25th. But I think Madonna's speech at the VMA's (below) was probably the best one.

Beyonce saves Taylor Swift's night

Lawsuit Slower than Decline in Popularity

The image above is the front of a card by Hallmark a few years ago.

Paris Hilton tried suing Hallmark in 2007 for "misappropriation of publicity and infringement on a federally registered trademark." Hallmark tried to get the case dismissed, but an appeals court ruled yesterday that the lawsuit will go ahead. Meanwhile, "Paris Hilton" as a search term seems to be locked into a steady year-on-year decline...
